Magazine Institutions

I would probably publish my magazine with Bauer as they have produced magazines such as Kerrang which is a big inspiration for my own magazine. I would be confident to use this company as Kerrang has been very successful which suggests they are comfortable with the rock genre and their magazines.

This is a reader profile for Kerrang! magazine. It shows that it's readers are predominantly male in the 15 - 24 age range. It also shows that just under half of readers are in the ABC1 profile which means they are working class whether it is upper, middle or lower. This reader profile will help the magazine as it will allow them to better understand their readers and it will make it easier to include features in the magazine suited to the majority of readers. It also helps with the decision of the price of the magazine as they know what social class majority of their readers are, so they can alter their price to suit the reader. By conducting this research and creating this reader profile, the magazine will be able to make positive changes to their magazine if needed to help increase sales.

Magazine Proposal 3

Potential Problems with My Coursework

Potential area where there might be a problem
How I will deal with this problem
Front cover images

There could be problems with my front cover images as they may get lost or they may not fit with the other elements of the magazine.

I will take multiple photos in many different poses to ensure there is a range of options to choose from. I will also back up all my photos and make sure I have multiple copies.
Article Inside Magazine

The band or artist I am using for my feature may have to pull out of the interview.
I would deal with this problem by trying to reschedule if possible but if not, I would have a contingency to ensure that I had an upcoming band or artist to feature in the debut article.
Images to accompany article

I could lose the images that I was going to use or they might not be of high enough standard.

I would make sure to back up all my work and I would also take multiple photos in different set-ups and try different filters to ensure the best photos are used with the article.

Magazine Proposal 2

AS Coursework Proposal Table

Type of Magazine (fashion, music, etc)

For my coursework I will be making a music magazine.
Name of Magazine

The name of my magazine will be Voltz.
Audience (male/female)

The audience for my magazine is both male and female teenagers aged 14 to 19.

They have a good sense of humour and are friendly and adventurous.
Outlet (where it can be bought from?)

My magazine will be available from newsagents and supermarkets as well as online and at gigs.
Necessary Information

I would charge £1.99 as my target audience are quite young therefore the magazine needs to be affordable and reasonably priced. It will begin from issue 1 and will be September 2013 edition. I will have the essential information located in the bottom third of the page next to the barcode and website address.
Selling Point

My magazine will feature exclusive interviews every week and will include a great competition and some free posters.
Theme (article)

The feature will be about an upcoming artist or band in the rock/alternative genre. The main image will be large and prominent on the page, however, there will be other images on the pages as well. I will use gender neutral colours such as red, yellow, green and black. I will use three columns for text and use a font such as Calibri or Times New Roman.
Images Front Cover

I will use images that will relate to the main feature. I will ask someone I know who is an artist or in a band to pose for the front cover and for the feature. The image will have a direct mode of address as I will make sure everyone in the photograph is looking at the camera.
Images Inside

The images inside will be secondary images relating to other features in the magazine. The main central image will be of the band that is on the front cover to highlight them as the main feature of the magazine.

Magazine Proposal 1

Describe your idea for the brief:
My magazine will be a music magazine designed for teens who enjoy the rock/alternative music genre. It will keep people up to date with the latest music, charts and soundtracks (movies). It will also address serious issues that teens may face. My front cover will be mostly neutral colours such as red, green, yellow, black and white which will be carried throughout the magazine. It will be quite cluttered to appeal to the target age group and promote many features within the magazine. The contents page will be predominantly images to appeal to teens but will also include a text contents list. The double page spread will be of an upcoming artist or band and it will be a debut styled article.

The genre for my magazine is rock/alternative. Similar texts that have inspired me are Kerrang (magazine, website and music channel) and Scuzz (music channel).
Target audience: gender/ age/ characteristics/ behaviour
Both males and females
Teenagers aged 14 – 19
People who enjoy rock music
People who are at school/university, have a part time job
Live in the city
Major conventions I will use:
Pull quotes
Rule of thirds
Direct mode of address
Enigma codes
Puffs
Masthead

Conventions I may subvert/ change/ not use
I would not use drop capitals as it does not engage me personally to the article.
Original images: what/ where/ what
I will take images of people I know in a band or an artist and I will book a studio at college to take the photos so they will look professional for the magazine.
I will use images relating to the main feature on the front page.
The images on the contents page to link to text in the magazine.
Potential difficulties/ Plan B:
Some difficulties I may face could be losing my work. I will overcome this by making sure all my work is backed up in multiple places. I could also have problems with the photos but I will take multiple photos of each pose to make sure I have enough photos in case anything goes wrong. I will also make sure that the photos are backed up on multiple computers and memory sticks.

Kerrang Magzine Deconstruction

On the front cover of the magazine, the masthead is located at the top of the page across the full top third of the page and is coloured white. This helps it stand out from the contrast of the dark background and also makes it very eye-catching.  It is also in a large font and capital letters. It has a smashed effect which adds some edge to the magazine and helps it fit in with the music genre it is advertising. It is partly covered by the main image which suggests that this magazine is already well established. It also has an exclamation mark at the end of the title. This adds volume and importance to the title and therefore the magazine itself. The essential information is located in the bottom right third of the page. It is situated with the bar code and is in a small font size. This allows the reader to find the information they need but it does not take any focus away from the magazines features. There is also a link to the magazine’s website. This is useful as it allows the reader to view features online which will be very popular with its target audience as they are a very technology orientated generation. The main image is of a well-known celebrity within the magazines music genre. It also uses a direct mode of address. This helps engage the reader within the magazine. The artist is wearing an outfit that is strange and unusual for the magazine genre which adds mystery and intrigues the reader. The main sell line uses bright colours to stand out from the background. This makes it eye-catching and will work to the magazines advantage. The use of ‘confessions’ is very vague and intrigues the reader; this can lead to them buying the magazine to find out what the magazine was talking about. The target audience for this magazine is teenagers aged 14-19. This is hinted by the cluttered front cover and including posters which would not be as appealing to older ages. The magazine also includes a puff in the form of a poster special and a competition to win lunch with the band 5 Finger Death Punch. These free items and competition offer attracts readers and increases the chance of them buying the magazine.

The mast head of the contents page is located in the top right third of the page. It is all in capitals and is coloured white. It is in a black circle with a paint splatted effect which helps it stand out from the rest of the page. The cover date and issue number are located in the top left and middle thirds of the page. The issue number is 1475 which suggests that this magazine has been out for a long time which shows that it is a popular, well established magazine. The form of address of the text is quite direct as the text addresses ‘you’ the reader. There is also a paragraph from the editor which is directed to the reader making it more personal to the reader and creating a friendly atmosphere and suggests the editor cares about the reader and their views. There is a lot of text to inform the reader of what the magazine involves which will attract readers if they articles that they find interesting and want to read. There are different images of varying size positioned around the page. There are different images of varying size positioned around the page and fit with the text. Bold capitals are used for headings and italics are used if the text is in another language to separate it from the rest of the text. The colours used are white, black and yellow and each stand out from their background. Although different fonts are used, sub-headings and descriptions keep the same font to help keep the page organised.

On the double page spread, the title takes up majority of one page (18). It is in a large bold font and is all capital letters. It uses different fonts that add a cartoon element to the article but also fit in with the nature of the text. This masthead is very eye-catching and grabs the reader’s attention. The image used is of a well-known celebrity within the magazines genre, and is positioned in the middle of the feature. He is wearing a strange costume which intrigues the reader and gives them a lot of questions which they need to read the article to answer. The colours used in the feature are the same as the front cover. This continuous use of colours shows the magazine is well thought out and planned. There is an unusual pull quote used which adds mystery and makes the reader curious and more likely to read the article. There are 3 columns used for text on page 19. The questions are in red and bold capitals to stand out and allow the reader to easily distinguish between the questions and answers. There are also drop caps used. It uses a direct mode of address as it asks the reader a question which will involve the reader and make them think. The strap line used on this feature does not give any indication as to what the article is about which adds mystery. It uses the conversation from the article to create the strapline which the reader won’t know unless they read the article.
