Kerrang Magzine Deconstruction




 












 On the front cover of the magazine, the masthead is located at the top of the page across the full top third of the page and is coloured white. This helps it stand out from the contrast of the dark background and also makes it very eye-catching.  It is also in a large font and capital letters. It has a smashed effect which adds some edge to the magazine and helps it fit in with the music genre it is advertising. It is partly covered by the main image which suggests that this magazine is already well established. It also has an exclamation mark at the end of the title. This adds volume and importance to the title and therefore the magazine itself. The essential information is located in the bottom right third of the page. It is situated with the bar code and is in a small font size. This allows the reader to find the information they need but it does not take any focus away from the magazines features. There is also a link to the magazine’s website. This is useful as it allows the reader to view features online which will be very popular with its target audience as they are a very technology orientated generation. The main image is of a well-known celebrity within the magazines music genre. It also uses a direct mode of address. This helps engage the reader within the magazine. The artist is wearing an outfit that is strange and unusual for the magazine genre which adds mystery and intrigues the reader. The main sell line uses bright colours to stand out from the background. This makes it eye-catching and will work to the magazines advantage. The use of ‘confessions’ is very vague and intrigues the reader; this can lead to them buying the magazine to find out what the magazine was talking about. The target audience for this magazine is teenagers aged 14-19. This is hinted by the cluttered front cover and including posters which would not be as appealing to older ages. The magazine also includes a puff in the form of a poster special and a competition to win lunch with the band 5 Finger Death Punch. These free items and competition offer attracts readers and increases the chance of them buying the magazine.


The mast head of the contents page is located in the top right third of the page. It is all in capitals and is coloured white. It is in a black circle with a paint splatted effect which helps it stand out from the rest of the page. The cover date and issue number are located in the top left and middle thirds of the page. The issue number is 1475 which suggests that this magazine has been out for a long time which shows that it is a popular, well established magazine. The form of address of the text is quite direct as the text addresses ‘you’ the reader. There is also a paragraph from the editor which is directed to the reader making it more personal to the reader and creating a friendly atmosphere and suggests the editor cares about the reader and their views. There is a lot of text to inform the reader of what the magazine involves which will attract readers if they articles that they find interesting and want to read. There are different images of varying size positioned around the page. There are different images of varying size positioned around the page and fit with the text. Bold capitals are used for headings and italics are used if the text is in another language to separate it from the rest of the text. The colours used are white, black and yellow and each stand out from their background. Although different fonts are used, sub-headings and descriptions keep the same font to help keep the page organised.

On the double page spread, the title takes up majority of one page (18). It is in a large bold font and is all capital letters. It uses different fonts that add a cartoon element to the article but also fit in with the nature of the text. This masthead is very eye-catching and grabs the reader’s attention. The image used is of a well-known celebrity within the magazines genre, and is positioned in the middle of the feature. He is wearing a strange costume which intrigues the reader and gives them a lot of questions which they need to read the article to answer. The colours used in the feature are the same as the front cover. This continuous use of colours shows the magazine is well thought out and planned. There is an unusual pull quote used which adds mystery and makes the reader curious and more likely to read the article. There are 3 columns used for text on page 19. The questions are in red and bold capitals to stand out and allow the reader to easily distinguish between the questions and answers. There are also drop caps used. It uses a direct mode of address as it asks the reader a question which will involve the reader and make them think. The strap line used on this feature does not give any indication as to what the article is about which adds mystery. It uses the conversation from the article to create the strapline which the reader won’t know unless they read the article.
